The Top 1% Use THIS WORD All the Time
Achieving success is not just a big jump from where you are right now to where you want to be. It's more of a gradual step-by-step progress towards your dream. Along the way you come to realize that you don't have certain knowledge, skills, and connections. The question is, "How do the most successful people explain these shortcomings to themselves and how is their explanation different from the average guy on the street?"
The difference is in just one word. The average person says “I don't have the resources. I don't have the skills or the knowledge”. For example, they want to start a business, they say “I don't know how to build a brand. I don't know anything about marketing funnels. I don't know how to build a team”. They're stuck there. They tend to think of themselves as somebody with a fixed amount of ability and there's nothing much that they can do to improve it in a big way.
On the contrary, the top one percent people say “I don't have the necessary skills YET. I don't have the connections YET. I don't know anything about marketing funnels YET”. The one word, the word YET, is empowering, because they tend to think about themselves as an entity in progress; somebody who is growing every single day. Thats's the distinction Dr. Carol Dweck makes about people with fixed mindset and people with growth mindset.
The fixed mindset people say “this is the amount of ability that I have and there's nothing much I can do about it. I have this amount of intelligence, skills, etc and I cannot change it that much”. But the growth minded people say “This is the amount of ability or intelligence that I have, but I can always make it better, I can always improve it. With enough time, persistence and effort I can transform it”.
Here's my message to you for this week: Next time you feel there are certain shortcomings that you have in order to achieve your success, choose the growth mindset. Decide to become a little bit better every single day. Remember the famous quote:
“Inch by inch, life's a cinch. Yard by yard, life's hard."
