GAIN BACK YOUR MOTIVATION WITH THIS TRICK

Gain Back Your Motivation with THIS TRICK

Today I was talking to one of my clients, and she was telling me that she is struggling financially, and when I noticed the way she was explaining her situation to me, I noticed that she was constantly repeating the fact that she was weaker in comparison to her competitors in the market, and she didn't have much to offer compared to the leaders in the industry and basically the fact that she was not good enough in this current economic situation.

At that moment, I remembered the concept of explanatory styles. Dr. Martin Seligman talks about the importance of the way we explain the adversities of life to ourselves:  1- Are we talking about those adversities in terms of being personal: Is it because of me that this is happening? 2- Pervasive: Does it affect all areas of my life? 3- And is it permanent or is it something that goes away pretty soon?

I told this client about the importance of explanatory styles, and she instantly realized that she had been impacting herself in a negative way because of the way she explained the situation to herself.

Because when you tell yourself that you're not good enough, you are telling yourself that this is something personal; this is a kind of a fault in my personality or character, and it's not going away, and it's definitely permanent, and I cannot do much the change it. But let's say if you tell yourself: "This is happening to me because of the global economic crisis" you're saying that this is not personal and this is not because of me and it is not definitely permanent because it's temporary and hopefully in the near future this situation will be over. Right?

And remember that we are not trying to evade responsibility; we are not trying to be inaccurate in the way we explain the adversity to ourselves; obviously, we try to be accurate, but it's no use to tell ourselves that everything bad is happening because of us, and It's something personal. It's no use to tell ourselves that this is going to be pervasive and it's going to affect all areas of my life. It's no use to tell ourselves that it is going to be permanent and nothing is going to change it. You'll get depressed! There is no use to it!

But, if we explain the situation (if we can) in terms of being impersonal, local and temporary, then we gain back our control! Then we can be creative; we can be flexible, and hopefully we will find a way to adapt and adjust to the situation.

So, the point I'm trying to make in this short video for you is that: Yes! You are going through some adversity in your life! You might be facing some obstacles and setbacks along the way, but pay attention to your explanatory style; pay attention to the way you explain the roots of that adversity to yourself.
